[Others]DTS: regional faults of cloud service providers no longer a nightmare

Recently, cloud service providers AWS and Azure have seen successive wide-affected service faults. AWS United States East 1 S3 went down, 26 data centers among Azure's total 28 data centers stopped working. For those companies that have concentrated their services/data in the faulted regions, the regional faults of AWS/Azure have directly led to the unavailability of their business services, resulting in immeasurable economic losses and a negative impact on the company's brand.
Nowadays, the flexibility, scalability and low cost of clouds make clouds the best technical choice for businesses. However, you can't put all your eggs in one basket. Even the most reliable cloud service providers may encounter a bad day. To ensure business continuity, you should create a cross-region data recovery center, and utilize hybrid cloud disaster recovery solutions. When the business-dependent region fails, the business can quickly switch to the disaster recovery center for second-level recovery of businesses.
The DTS data transmission service that Alibaba Cloud provides can support real-time data synchronization between a variety of common relational databases/NoSQL databases to help you quickly build a data disaster recovery center to achieve the most robust business continuity. Since 2013, DTS has been supporting the real-time data synchronization between three units on Double 11 shopping carnivals for four consecutive years. Since Alibaba Cloud provided services for users in 2014, DTS has served tens of thousands of users. Many outstanding companies are using DTS to implement data recovery to improve business continuity.
DTS disaster recovery solution
DTS can provide users with a variety of remote data disaster recovery solutions, including Alibaba Cloud cross-region disaster recovery and cloud disaster recovery centers. You can choose any disaster recovery solution as needed.
Solution 1: Alibaba Cloud cross-region disaster recovery
If your business has been deployed in Alibaba Cloud Region A, you can build a data disaster recovery center in Region B through DTS to avoid business unavailability caused by a fault in Region A. The specific business architecture as follows:
As shown in the figure above, when Region A normally provides the service, the business writing traffic and primary reading traffic are undertaken by business and data storage in Region A. The disaster recovery data in Region B can provide querying, reporting, testing or backup capabilities, further reducing the cost of disaster recovery while ensuring the high availability of businesses.
When Region A suffers a regional fault, the business will switch the traffic directly to Region B and the business can be restored within seconds, perfectly avoiding the economic losses caused by the fault and the impact on the company's brand.
Solution 2: Cloud disaster recovery center
If your business is not migrated to the cloud yet, you can also use Alibaba Cloud as another data center of yours. The establishment of cloud disaster recovery centers on Alibaba Cloud through DTS can avoid business unavailability caused by a fault in the local IDC center. Compared with the self-built IDC disaster recovery center in other regions, this disaster recovery solution boasts evident advantages such as a low cost and high scalability.
As shown in the figure above, when the local self-built IDC normally provides the service, the business writing traffic and primary reading traffic are undertaken by business and data storage in the local self-built IDC. The disaster recovery data of Alibaba Cloud can provide querying, reporting, testing or backup capabilities, further reducing the cost of disaster recovery while ensuring the high availability of businesses.
When self-built IDC suffers a regional fault, the business will switch the traffic directly to Alibaba Cloud and the business can be restored within seconds, perfectly avoiding the economic losses caused by the fault and the impact on the company's brand.
The data disaster recovery implemented by DTS is the basis for disaster recovery centers. In addition to providing remote data recovery capabilities, DTS can also help you achieve zero-downtime migration of businesses, OLTP > OLAP real-time data synchronization, real-time distribution of incremental data in databases and other business requirements.
