Solution : Using Alip2v to migrate servers to Alibaba Cloud

More Posted time:Jan 28, 2018 15:09 PM
Alip2v is a handy tool for server migration to Alibaba Cloud, and can be used for below scenarios.
1. Physical server migration to Alibaba cloud
2. Virtual server migration to Alibaba cloud
3. Any cloud server migration to Alibaba cloud

Note: You can migrate both system and data disks using Alip2v, but for servers those have transcational data such as DB servers etc. you need to find other 3rd party tool for sync/replication of databases.

Windows-specific requirements/considerations:
  1. Recommended system disk size: 40 GB ~ 500 GB.
  2. Imported Windows images must provide Windows activation service.
  3. The firewall must be disabled. Otherwise, remote login is not possible. Port 3389 must be
  4. Disable user account control (UAC) to enable changes to be made to the system.
  5. Images can only be imported from the system disk. we cannot import images from data disks.
  6. Image import does not support the use of multiple network interfaces or IPv6 addresses.
  7. Passwords must be 8 ~ 30 characters in length and contain three types of characters (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters).
  8. It is recommended that we install the XEN and KVM virtualization platform drivers. (Will be taken
         care by the tool)
The guide below shows step-by-step instructions for using Alip2v:
1.       Install Alip2v and convert VM to VHD
2.       Install OSS client and upload VHD to OSS
3.       Import VHD to ECS image (it will appear in custom images)
4.       Create ECS instance from custom image

1.       Run Alip2v setup   ( Download Alip2v setup from this link  and Install Alip2v tool on same server that need to be migrated to Alibaba cloud )

This might give error if .Net 4 is missing on the system, please install .Net 4 framework

Run Alip2v tool from desktop shortcut

Read source system information
Specify destination system

Select: Destination as KVM & Virtual disk format as VHD
Specify the disk size (disk size should be: 40 GB + 1.1 * used disk capacity)

(for example: total capacity is 30 GB and used space is 10 GB, you will specify 50 GB minimum as size of system disk as shown below:

Specify destination to save vhd file (your disk must have empty space equal to used capacity - 10-12 GB in this case) Click Next -> Run
A prompt will be displayed to Install all KVM supported drivers (click Ok and click Install)

Now you will conversion progress window

Disk conversion process completed, a disk is created as “Computer Name-DiskNumber.vhd” on your mentioned saved location.

   2.       Install OSS client and upload VHD to OSS
Download OSS client from this link here( Install OSS client on same server, run setup as "Run as administrator")

Run OSS client and login using your access key and secret

On next screen, Click on “Skip Settings”

This will OSS storage and buckets, click on "bucket" name, now you can upload files by clicking on “Upload” button, select the VHD file which you want to upload. File upload status is shown in bottom pane.
You can get file address – right click on uploaded VHD object and click on "Get address"
Click “copy” to copy the URL of uploaded file
 3.       Import VHD as image
Login into Alibaba console
Go to ECS ->
Select your region
Click on Images -> Import Image

click on "confirm address" and click on "Confirm Authorization Policy"

Paste URL of uploaded VHD file in OSS Object Address, Select Operating System, specify system disk size, system architecture, system plaform.

Select Image format as "VHD"  , Click “OK”
Image uploaded will be displayed under custom images

4.       Create ECS instance from custom image
You can create instance from this custom image.
