Understanding the Cloud Computing Stack: SaaS, PaaS, IaaS

The cloud, the platform for enabling easy, on-demand access to shared computing resources, has taken the enterprise world by a storm. Cloud Computing is a broad term for a wide range of services. To understand how Cloud can be of value to your organization, it first crucial to understand what the different components of Cloud are. The Cloud stack comprises of three computing services generally termed as Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).

1.      Software as a Service
SaaS is a distribution model in which software is licensed on a subscription basis and is centrally hosted. SaaS is usually accessed using a web browser. It is an on-demand delivery model that works in conjunction with a third-party service provider. SaaS provides flexibility and scalability and offers large-scale application adoption with shorter deployment periods.
SaaS is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. According to a recent research by Forrester, SaaS revenues are forecasted to hit $106B in 2016, a 21% increase from what was projected in 2015.
Listed below are 5 key benefits of using SaaS:

2. Platform as a Service
PaaS is a cloud computing model that offers a seamless platform for the developers to develop, run and manage applications.  Software and hardware is provided by the PaaS host, freeing the user from the effort of installing the hardware and software to develop an app.
Platform as a service has been pushed to a point of ubiquity because of the increased demand for lower time-to-market. Recent surveys conclude that PaaS is growing rapidly as many of application deployment trends have shifted focus to continuous delivery.
Listed below are the 3 key benefits of using PaaS:

3. Infrastructure as a Service
According to a study by Gartner, Infrastructure as a Service will reach a CAGR of 41% through 2016 making it the fastest growing area of public cloud computing.
IaaS offers on-demand, scalable computing resources that can be accessed over the Internet. It provides hardware, storage, servers and network components.
Listed below are the 3 key benefits of IaaS:

Cloud Computing is an umbrella term that offers the multitude of services from IaaS as the base, PaaS as the tool and SaaS as on-premise applications. With a market of around $100 billion, Cloud is driving technology as we know it through a very significant paradigm shift. The future is most certainly a silver lined cloud.
