Introduction

Global AI Challenge on Meteorology Catch Rain If You Can
Megacities in the Greater Bay Area, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and other cities alike are often bombarded by severe weather with varying degrees of impact on society and people’s safety. One such example is heavy rain, which is notoriously volatile in nature and extremely difficult to catch, even just a couple of hours in advance! Can our cities be made smarter to shield the impact of severe weather? Is artificial intelligence (AI) the right agent to uphold the “shield”? To this end, the Meteorological Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality (SZMB) and the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) have made a joint visionary decision to step out the meteorological box and post the open challenge “Catch Rain If You Can!” on Alibaba Cloud's Tianchi platform and let data scientists from all over the world team up to help people stay dry in megacities!
Contest Award
  • First Prize USD $12,000

  • Second Prize USD $6,000

  • Third Prize USD $3,000

  • Fourth Prize USD $1,500

  • Fifth Prize USD $1,000

The top five ranked AI “shields” in the final test will win the above prizes according to their respective ranking. In addition to monetary prizes, the five winning teams will be invited to present their innovative solutions at the IEEE ICDM 2018 workshop held in Singapore, with an additional USD $1,500 to be awarded per team as a traveling allowance.
